Dr. Carsten Nicolaus, MD, PhD
Dr. Nicolaus has been licenced to practise medicine since 1988. From 1990 – 2008 Dr. Nicolaus directed his extended general practitioner practice in Augsburg. Besides primary health care he expanded his practice focus by the following areas:
Tick-borne diseases
- Geriatric medicine (medical attendance of several large nursing homes in Augsburg)
- Diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases (veins as well as arteries)
- Trained as qualified diabetologist
- Pain therapy in the general practice, complemented by acupuncture and neural therapy
- Orthomolecular medicine
- Preventive medicine
- Trained as qualified andrologist CMI® (2005)
The specialization in tick-borne diseases, particularly Lyme disease and co-infections, resulted from the location of his general practice in Augsburg-Bergheim, close to the National Park „Naturpark Westliche Wälder“. The largest forest and recreation area in the region. For as long as 17 years Dr. Nicolaus has been confronted with so called "tick-patients". He understands the complexity of the problem, especially concerning the diagnosis of the attending physician and the laboratories. He knows about the difficulties arising from co-infections, which are lacking scientific research, for diagnosis and therapy – and he knows about the psychological strains of the afflicted patients in connection with their uncertainty. His experience and competence from the past 22 years of practical experience supplemented by numerous national and international conferences and the understanding of the drastically increasing complexity of the problem led to the foundation of the private practice in 2006.
Besides his medicinal activity Dr. Nicolaus is engaged voluntarily and is a member of various professional associations:
- Instructor of P.A.I.N. Initiative against pain, main focus: pain therapy in the general practice
- Chairman of the association ZecTect e.V., association for prevention, diagnosis and therapy of the Lyme disease and TBE (tick-borne meningoencephalitis)
- German Borreliosis Society (active member)
- The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) - Chairman of the ILADS Networking Committee
- NPA Gesellschaft zur Förderung einer naturwissenschaftlich-physiologisch begründeten Akupunktur e.V. - Association for Acupuncture
- Professional Association of Phlebologists
- Bavarian Association of General Gractitioners
- Environment Initiative of Bergheim e.V., 14 years as its chairman (1993-2007)
- Honorary judge at the Bavarian Administrative Court in Augsburg, Germany
Dr. Nicolaus also is the chief executive of the B-C-A Borreliose Centrum Augsburg Betriebs GmbH & Co. KG.
