Therapies
Acute Lyme disease cases, i.e. immediately after a tick bite, are relatively easy to treat. But also late manifestationsof Lyme disease, i.e. if a tick bite was not noticed or insufficient treatment took place, are also curable in most cases - however, this can often take several months. In case of long-term Lyme disease infections sometimes only a relief of the ailments can be achieved.
Lyme disease infections are curable in most cases, but in general only on a long-term basis of several months.
Our physicians determine an individual therapy plan for each patient based on the diagnosis (complex anamnesis, physical examination and laboratory blood test results). The plan is more complex and of longer duration in case of chronic forms of Lyme disease (stage III - late manifestations of the disease) compared to early stages of the illness.
The following is aimed with such a therapy plan, especially in case of chronic forms of the disease:
- fighting the pathogens (Borrelia, often persisting, and possible co-infections, such as Chlamydia, Rickettsia, Yersinia, Bartonella and other bacteria and viruses)
- intensive reduction of chronic inflammations (in the tissue and joints)
- improving the neurological ailments
- pain theryp
- strengthening of the immune system and immune defense (incl. correcting specific autoimmune reactions)
- strengthening of specific organ functions (liver, kidneys, intestine, etc.)
The main focus of every therapy is a highly dosed antibiotics treatment ("Augsburg Scheme") for a period of several weeks under the surveillance of the attending physician (mostly in the form of an infusion therapy). This fights the Borrelia bacteria in the body and supports the immune system in building up resistance. Please note that we treat according to the ILADS guidelines (International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society - www.ilads.org). Therefore, we are in the middle of a dispute as this long-term treatment (several weeks / months) and the antibiotics are not yet supported by the leading opinion in Germany.
In many cases a Lyme disease treatment with antibiotics only is not enough. The successful treatment of Lyme disease demands additional „accompanying therapies“ and “changes of life style".
"Accompanying therapies" in terms of a holistic therapy concept can have the following effects:
- Better compatibility and effectiveness of the antibiotics (e.g. with selected dietary supplements)
- Strengthening of the immune system (holistic)
- Pain relief (even for chronic pain)
- Milieu change to create an "unfavourable situation" for further reproduction of Borrelia bacteria
- Detection of „hidden“ Borrelia bacteria in the connective tissue
- Fewer production of inflammation supporting Cytokine and regulation of Th1/Th2 balance
- Treatment of depressive mood (i.e. increase of serotonin levels)
- Support of organ functioning (liver, kidneys, intestine) as well as "flush-out" of toxic substances
- Improvement of body physics.
"Accompanying therapies", which we feel are necessary during the therapy, include change of diet (alkaline and anti-inflammatory - several phases), milieu corrections through "deacidification & detox", selected dietary supplements, rehabilitation and excersise therapies, mental coaching and various physio- and electro-therapies.
